Location

Just one block down from famous Antons hides this little gem. Thai Cafe is an unpresumptuous restaurant on Hastings. It is very simple on both the outside and inside. It is red with a large glass windows facing the street and plain dark tables and chairs inside.

Experience

I went here with a friend of mine on BC Day. It was half past seven and besides us there were only 6 other people seated at various tables scattered around the restaurant. Our server was very prompt and came back several times before we were ready to order. She brought us water right away, quickly followed by the tea that we asked for. Though I love Thai coffee I decided I would hold off on it as I did have plans to fall asleep later that night, the last thing I needed was caffeine jitters.

I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I had many options to choose from. Any restaurant that has more than four vegetarian options immediately gets extra points. I decided on the spring rolls and the red curry with tofu, while my friend got the green curry with tofu. We split a large rice together, they had 3 different types of rice to choose from!

Food

First out were the spring rolls. They were already the perfect temperature when they got to the table, no burnt tongue here! They weren’t super saturated with oil which was nice, and the flavours blended together well. Nothing was super overpowering.

Next we got our main dishes. The curries did not have any spice options and I would have loved if they had been spicier, but they were delicious all the same. They came in little white bowls with the rice on the side. The red curry was sweeter and creamier than the green curry but both were delicious. The bamboo shoots in it had soaked up tons of curry flavor but still maintained their tangy taste. The green curry had a sharper taste with a little more spice. The vegetables were perfect, not to crunchy or soft, and the tofu had a perfectly battered crispy outside.

Overall my experience here was very pleasant, I left feeling full and happy! Its definitely somewhere I’ll come back to for a warm bowl of comforting curry.
