The opening of Yama Café is a huge rejoice for Vancouver foodies. The current owner and chef Mr. Yama was a staff and friend to the owners of the former Basho Cafe, a beloved neighborhood cafe in the East Hastings area. Basho Café was closed due to the owners would like to retire. Five months later, Yama Café opens and carries on the same exquisite quality of her predecessor.

Yama Cafe Pastries

The selections of Yama Cafe’s Japanese style pastries are the gems of the cafe. Fresh mini cakes such as mocha cakes and muffins, homemade style cookies and sweet pastries adorn the front counter glass cupboard and never cease to amaze café customers of how cute and delicious they are.

Yama Cafe Lunch Sets

I am especially fond of Yama Cafe’s delicious tuna tataki lunch set. Fresh tuna pieces, powdered with house special spice and some finely chopped ginger paste are placed neatly on top of some rice, served with fresh greens and Japanese style homemade pickled radish. If hungry, order it as a lunch set and an additional salad, soup and a dessert (from the pastry cupboard) will come along with the set.

Yama Cafe Drink Menu

Yama Café have chosen 49th Parallel Coffee Roaster as their coffee bean provider, a different choice from Basho Café, who picked Handiworks Coffee Studio’s beans, also a BC local company. While the beans might come from different suppliers, the quality of the coffee beverage are the same highest quality. Smooth hand pour over coffee goes great with any of the Yama Café sweets. I especially adore their matcha latte, perfect with some of their mini cookies, if available in the cupboard.

I see each opportunity I get to visit Yama Café a blessing. The owner and staffs at this lovely café are friendly and passionate about serving the highest quality of healthy foods and well-crafted beverages to their customers. I always buy a box of takeout sweets after each visit, a couple pieces of goodness to help cheer myself on until nextime.
